Mental Health Mondays at The People’s Church

0

The First Spanish United Methodist Church—The People’s Church—is offering Mental Health Mondays.  Organizers are now entering their third week since its launch on September 11th. The sessions are hosted by neighborhood residents Tanya Sanchez (Certified Herbalist, Event Planner, Author, and Advocate) and Carmen Milagros Rosado (Artist, Author, Mental Health Peer Specialist,  and Advocate).

According to Ms. Sanchez, “We have both endured our history or trauma in which we have survived, coped with ongoing daily challenges, utilizing holistic tools.

“Our goal is to create a space where individuals can simply be themselves, free of judgment or criticism in a safe place as they gain or share tools for their healing journey.  We have several stations set up to wake their minds, hearts, and spirits.  There is a table with herbal teas, one with aromatherapy, another is the creative station where they can sit and create from many of the projects offered, and inspirational books, quotes and readings.  Mental Health resources from other organizations are displayed for informational purposes.

“Participants sign in and select a positive word to flow with during the event and then meditate on the word during a two minute meditation guided by Carmen Rosado. Zenful music is played in the background as they create, drink their teas or interact with other members. The set up is one of peace and calm.  Our four-month plan includes Reiki healing, meditation, essential oils therapy, drumming, movement, nutrition, yoga, and acupuncture.

“This is the beginning of this much-needed program in our community and ask all who can to offer their time or services to this beautifully created program that is for the community.  You can come in and speak of mental health services offered or mail us all of your information to display at the resource table.  We look forward to collaborating with you all on similar projects and goals that bring healing to our community.

“We thank you all in advance for your attention and consideration.  Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate in contacting us.”
